If you’ve ever done a road trip with kids, you know that snacks are not optional, they are survival gear. And if you’ve discovered the magic of Costco road trip snack runs, then you are absolutely our people. We load up before every single Utah adventure, and over the years we’ve dialed in our absolute favorite picks. Here are the Costco snacks that never leave our car on road trip days, and yes, we’re a little obsessed.
That’s It Beef Sticks
These are a non-negotiable in our road trip bag, full stop. That’s It Beef Sticks from Costco are the holy grail of kid-friendly protein snacks. They’re made with simple, clean ingredients, they’re not too spicy, they’re the perfect size for little hands, and they hold up in the car without getting gross. Every single person in our family loves them, even our pickiest eater reaches for these without complaint.
On a long day of driving through Southern Utah, these are what keep the hunger meltdowns at bay between meals. We buy the big Costco box and it somehow still never lasts the whole trip. If you haven’t tried these yet, pick them up on your next Costco run, you will not regret it. Officially a road trip staple in our house!
Popcorners
Is there a more perfect road trip snack than Popcorners? We don’t think so. Light, crunchy, not too messy, and absolutely delicious, Popcorners check every single box. The Costco variety pack means everyone gets their favorite flavor, which solves approximately 40% of all sibling disputes in our car.
We love that they’re not as greasy as regular chips (fewer orange-fingerprint situations on the iPad screen), and they’re light enough that the kids can snack on them without getting full before a hike. The white cheddar flavor is a particular family favorite, but honestly every flavor is a win. These are a permanent fixture in our snack bag and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Yogi Clusters
If you haven’t discovered Yogi Clusters from Costco yet, today is your lucky day. These little granola clusters are absolutely addictive, the perfect mix of crunch, sweetness, and just enough heartiness to actually keep you going. They’re great for kids and adults equally, and they work as a snack on their own or sprinkled over some yogurt if you’re getting fancy at a picnic stop.
We love these because they feel a little more substantial than chips but aren’t heavy or too sweet. They’re the snack that bridges the gap between breakfast and lunch on those early-start hiking days. The Costco bag is enormous (classic Costco) and we’ve never once come home with any left over. That’s the true test of a great snack. We are fully, unashamedly devoted to Yogi Clusters.
A Few More Costco Favorites Worth Grabbing
While those three are our ride-or-die must-haves, here are a few other Costco picks that regularly make the rotation on our road trips:
- Kirkland Nut Mix, The classic. Almonds, cashews, and macadamia nuts. Great for adults and older kids. High in protein and keeps you full on long drives.
- Chomps Beef Sticks, Another great meat stick option with really clean ingredients. Similar vibe to That’s It but with a slightly different flavor profile. The kids love both!
- Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars, These are perfect for younger kids. Soft, not too sweet, a little fruity, and they don’t crumble everywhere. The blueberry pomegranate flavor is our favorite.
- Kirkland Protein Bars, For the adults on long driving days when you need real fuel. Surprisingly good for a store-brand protein bar.
- Squeeze Applesauce Pouches, An absolute must if you have toddlers or young kids. No mess, no utensils, and kids love them. Stock up, you’ll go through more than you think.
Our Costco Pre-Road Trip Strategy
Here’s our actual system: the night before a big road trip, we do a Costco snack run and set up what we call the “snack caddy”, a small over-the-seat organizer in the backseat with a curated selection of the above. Each kid gets to pick one “special” snack that’s just theirs, and then we have shared snacks for the car.
This sounds extra, and it is, but it has genuinely transformed our road trip experience. Happy, fed kids are adventurous kids. And adventurous kids make for the best family memories. So yes, we take our Costco snack game very seriously, and we stand by it completely!
What are your family’s go-to road trip snacks? We’re always looking for new Costco finds to add to the rotation. Drop them in the comments!
