We Tried to Road Trip All of Ireland in One Week. Here is What Happened.

My husband and I had one week and a goal of road tripping around as much of Ireland and Northern Ireland as possible. So we rented a camper from Roadsurfer and hit the road. This is part 1 of a 3 part series, and Ireland was honestly a literal dream. I could road trip there for months and not get bored. The scenic drives and dramatic cliff sides make this one of the top road trips we have ever done.

Why We Chose a Camper Van

We booked through Roadsurfer, which has pickup locations all over Europe including Ireland. Renting a camper cut our accommodation costs way down and gave us the flexibility to stop wherever we wanted. Ireland is not a country you want to rush through. The roads are narrow and slow and the detours are constantly calling your name, but that is honestly the whole point.

One thing worth knowing before you go: Ireland drives on the left. My husband needed about 45 minutes of white-knuckling it before it felt normal. The country roads are narrow with no real shoulder, so give yourself grace on day one.

What the First Few Days Looked Like

We started in Dublin, picked up the camper, and headed west along the Wild Atlantic Way. The coastline alone is worth the trip. Stone walls, green rolling hills, and the Atlantic just sitting there being dramatic. We pulled over constantly. The landscape changes every hour, which keeps it exciting the entire drive.

Some of the best moments happened completely by accident, stumbling on ancient ruins sitting unguarded in a field or finding a tiny village with one pub that turned out to be the best decision of the day. Ireland rewards you for slowing down.
